Thanks to the social isolation caused by Covid, many teens developed depression who would not have normally gotten it. Others saw their depression deepen over the next few years which caused them to start thinking about suicide. Are you one of them?
Let’s be clear; Jesus loves you too much to want you to die by suicide. There is no religious or Biblical reason for suicide.
Suicide hurts your family for the rest of their lives. Many people think that if they were dead, friends and family wouldn’t care or wouldn’t be hurt. Nothing is further from the truth. I have counseled many people whose lives were tortured for years by memories of a suicide by a family member or friend.
Modeling suicide may also influence your brothers or sisters or friends to commit suicide, a copycat suicide. They will certainly think about it when under a lot of stress and you know life hands out significant stress to everyone.
There are no good reasons for you to commit suicide. Not one. Your pain may be intense, but most, if not all the pain, will go away if you talk to professional helpers.
The first step in getting relief from your pain requires you to talk with professionals. I suggest you start by calling the national suicide crisis hotline. Even if you are not actively thinking about suicide now, give them a call.
Here is the contact number in the United States for the suicide and crisis hotline helpers. Available in English and 240 other languages (the wait is a little longer)!
1. Call or text: 9-8-8
2. Chat online: 988lifeline.org
3. If you are outside the U.S., you can call this number, 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
4. Support for people who are deaf and hard of hearing: Use your preferred relay service or dial 711 then 1-800-273-8255.
At the end of your call, ask them for a referral to a professional counselor (see if they have a listing for Christian counselors) whom you can talk to after the call. If you start meeting with a counselor and become overwhelmed between meetings, you can always call back to 988.
Even if the counselor is not a Christian, God wants you to move past this crisis and try to prevent a future crisis from happening. Your counselor’s goal is the same as that of a Christian counselor, to break you free of your obsession with suicide.
NOTE: if you know someone who might be thinking about suicide, give them this number, 988.
